Billing Clarification - Legacy Hobby Plan - Growing Usage

Hello,
I read a few topics about billing and specifically about my concerns but I’m still a bit confused so I’d like to describe my case and hope that someone would be able to answer.

I am on the Legacy Hobby Plan and, as I understand, bills under $5 are being waived each month.
But, my hobby apps are beginning to grow and the bill each month is becoming larger.
So, I started to wonder, what happens after the $5 threshold? Do I get billed or does my account (organization/apps) get suspended (stop working) the moment I reach $5? I think I read somewhere that you do get billed. So, my actual concern: What if I suddenly get a spike in usage (I’m imagining someone maliciously trying to do it) and I get a huge bill? How can I prevent giving more money than I’ve intended? Can I set a cap somehow? I see there’s something called “Credits” that I can buy and they look like something that may work for my case, but I couldn’t find anywhere a description on how they work. If I buy credits, does billing (and thus my apps) stop as soon as I reach the amount of credits that I’ve bought?

I thank you for your attention and apologize for the burst of questions, but the more I think about it, the more questions come up…

To summarize and clarify: I’m not trying to avoid paying, I’m trying to avoid paying a sudden large amount of money without intending to.

Hi… The way to do that on Fly.io is retroactive:

No caps or circuit-breakers can be set a priori, and Fly seems very against ever having such a feature (except in a hypothetical future students-only tier).

They consider the idea of wanting a site to be simply turned off to place a person outside of the professional-minded clientele that they’re primarily catering to, basically.

(I don’t fully agree with this myself, but I at least see where they’re coming from…)

Hope this helps!

Aside: Credits are actually worse for this, since they’re consumed immediately—with no waiver.

Thank you! This answer helps, yes.
Though, I think I will indulge my paranoia and implement some defenses of my own, just in case.
