Opt-in to Granular Bandwidth Billing

We launched Granular Bandwidth Billing a few weeks ago. This reduces private network data transfer prices: $0 in region, and as much at 90% cheaper between regions.

You can now opt existing organizations into Granular Bandwidth Billing.

Why use the Granular Bandwidth Billing?

Previously, the rates for private data transfer were same as the rates for transfer to the public internet. The new, granular pricing model reduces the cost for private data transfer significantly, and makes them free for transfer within the same region. You will benefit from this if you application is heavy on private networking.

Why not opt in to Granular Bandwidth Billing?

If your apps don’t make heavy use of private networking, there are edge cases where the modernized billing could cost you more money.

Specifically, if you have an app running in India and it’s getting traffic from South Africa, you’ll end up paying for the hop between, which we previously did not bill for. This is worst case, costing effectively $0.05/GB from Africa to India, and then $0.12/GB from our datacenters in India to your users.

So make sure you’re running Machines close to your users before you turn this on. And then you’re going to save money.

How do I opt-in?

Go to the billing page for your organization.

If your organization does not use the granular data transfer rates, you will see a card to opt-in.

One last caveat

This is a feature of our new billing platform. There are a small number of customers who are still using our old, Founder-Built-Billing-System ™️. These customers need to contact support to get migrated to new billing.
