I signed up, began testing, kept seeing “free for a week”. Still testing but now 24h later blocked from publishing. Confusing messaging, frustrating, I would like to have completed testing to make a high confidence recommendation to subscribe to Fly.

Did the promo you see not include the first part?
A free trial on Fly.io includes 2 hours of machine runtime or 7 days of access, whichever comes first.
we can probably make this clearer.
I vaguely recall that the free trial was for a week at one point, but like all cloud platforms, the freebies tend to tail off as a business gets established (and as the grumpy shareholders start pressing harder for a return on their investment).
I’d recommend just putting a valid card in. Spending a little money to test a service is fine, in my view, and it helps prevent the platform getting overrun by spammers and fraudsters. It also used to be the case that very small bills (<$5USD) were not collected, though I don’t know if that applies to sign-ups now.
