How does committed discount work with legacy hobby plan's free allowance?

I am in the middle of calculating the cost to host my app and db on fly.

i played around with the calculator and got annual 36 dollars for the reservation, plus
3.18 monthly for a tiny machine. since i am in legacy hobby plan, does that mean the 3.18 (or the majority of it) would be within my monthly free allowance?

also, if my monthly goes over the 5 dollar limit, do i start paying the difference? or the full amount?
for example if my monthly in calculator is 8 dollars, do i start paying 3 dollars or the full 8 dollars?

Thanks!

It’s the full 8 dollars.

(Also, the $5 waiver isn’t really official, so it may disappear at any moment. I wouldn’t make any plans around it, basically.)

If it’s eligible now, then it would continue to be.

The free allowance, unlike the $5 waiver, is basically a set of earmarked credits. They’ll get subtracted off before your reservation is deducted.

(I use the closely related pre-paid credits.)

You can see your existing free-allowance credits being consumed by looking on the dashboard, under Billing > Active Credits > Show Breakdown.

Hope this helps!

thanks for the clarification!

i thought the $5 allowance is official for legacy hobby plan users, and only unofficial for new plans?

The free allowance, unlike the $5 waiver, is basically a set of earmarked credits. They’ll get subtracted off before your reservation is deducted.

so if my understanding is correct, since im in legacy hobby plan, if my usage costs 6 dollars, i should just pay 1 dollar? assuming mine is the free allowance not the waiver? sorry for the confusion..

No worries… It’s confusing because currently both the official and the unofficial mechanisms apply to the Legacy Hobby Plan (simultaneously)…

“Free allowance” is the official, documented one (at the link above), and “$5 waiver” is the unofficial leniency. You’re getting both at present.

The Legacy Hobby Plan doesn’t have a specific $5 figure associated with it; instead there are special-purpose credits for small things like shared-cpu-1x 256MB Machines ($6) and volume storage ($0.50).

For example, if this month you end up having $3 worth of shared-cpu-1x 256MB Machines, $0.75 worth of volumes, and $7 worth of performance Machines (those add up quickly!), then this is how it would work out…

$3 is less than the $6 credit for tiny Machines (that specific kind), so that’s zeroed out.

$0.75 is more than the $0.50 credit for volumes, so it contributes the remainder, $0.25, to the invoice.

The $7 dollars doesn’t have any Legacy Hobby Plan credit that pertains to it, so the full $7 dollars goes into the total.

That leaves $7.25 due that month. Since this is more than the $5 waiver, you pay the full $7.25.

However, if the usage of performance Machines had instead been only $4, then there would have been $4.25 due, and hence the whole thing would have been waived…

(Newer users only get this second part.)
