Where are platform logs stored for an nrt app? (data residency, follow-up to a closed thread)

Following up on a closed thread: “Is The Default Grafana Region Location Known
and Does It Change?” (/t/is-the-default-grafana-region-location-known-and-does-it-change/28017),
where @lillian answered on 2026-06-04:

fly hosted logs/metrics are currently stored in US - specifically replicated
between New York and Boston, although the specific locations may change in the future.

We run a production app in nrt. A customer in Japan is reviewing us on data
residency and that answer is currently our only source, so we would like to
confirm a few things before we cite it in a customer-facing document.

  1. Does that answer cover both the app log search index (what fly logs and
the Logs API read, ~7 day retention) and hosted metrics, for an app whose
Machines run in nrt? If logs and metrics differ, we would like to state them
    separately.

  2. Is there any way to constrain it — (a) pinning platform log/metrics storage to
a chosen region, or (b) disabling the hosted log search index for an app entirely,
so stdout only goes to our own sink via a log shipper and Fly retains nothing?

  3. The answer says locations “may change in the future”. Is there a changelog,
status feed, or account notification that would tell us if that happens? We have
to commit to reporting any change in data location, so we need to know whether we
    would find out.

Also, if it is easy to answer: does the Fly proxy keep its own request logs
(method, path, status, client IP) separately from the app’s stdout, and if so,
where are those stored and for how long?

A short citable answer, or a link to something we can reference, is all we need.
Thanks.

yes, both logs and metrics are stored in US.

it’s not possible to change the region, or to disable the log sink. you can instead stop sending logs to the machine’s stdout, and send them somewhere else (for instance via HTTP in your own app, or with a sidecar such as https://vector.dev/).

I can’t commit to an answer regarding change of locations, but the most likely answer is that we would not move existing logs/metrics outside US, but rather add alternate locations (chosen by the user).

as for the fly-proxy question, in the general case request logs are not stored. when you request logs to be stored for platform debugging, generally via Support, these would be stored in the same location as other app logs (but visible only to Fly.io staff), with similar retention to app logs.
