Paying for phx.new with a prepaid credit card

Hi there =)
I’m really curious about phx.new and would like to play around with it. However, the only credit card I have is a prepaid one. I searched for threads about this and the information that is out there is a bit confusing to me. On one hand I already got told that for phx.new specifically there is only the creditcard option. On the other hand I can find two claims:

  1. creditcard only/pay-as-you-go only got introduced to mitigate freetier abuse.
  2. There is an option to buy prepaid credits.

Is point 2. completely made outdated by point 1? I can still find it in the docs: Fly.io Billing · Fly Docs

I clicked around in the ui for quite a while but I did not find any way to use my credit card to add. credits.

phx.new is a monthly subscription and I would be upfront for each month so I would hope there is some solution, where allowing me to pay this way would not risk any abuse?

Sorry, if this is a duplicate, as I said the information out there is a bit contradictory to me. I’m happy to receive any answer that clears things up for me.

Cheers

Hi… billing@fly.io is the place to get full clarity, i.e., the official answer, on topics such as this; you don’t need a Support plan to email that particular address (unlike the others).

Pay-as-you-go wasn’t about the abuse aspect, but rather the fact that nearly all legitimate customers found the previous system confusing. Both the new and the old way attempt to collect money after you’ve consumed resources, which is the crux of the abuse problem.

Pre-paid credits definitely still exist. (That’s what I use, myself, actually.) I see a small box to buy more at fly.io/dashboard → Billing → Buy Credits.

(I still have $24.99 left of the $25 that I bought in 2023, so I didn’t try again.)

You may be right that Phoenix.new per se can’t be used that way, though. That part of their business is still rather preliminary, from what I hear, and it wouldn’t be surprising if it lacked full support for certain corner cases…

Hope this helps a little!

Hi, thanks for your answer!

This is what this site looks like for me:

When clicking on credit card, my card is not accepted. I assume this is because it is a prepaid card (I am using it on multiple other places and have tried adding it here on multiple days).

If that assumption is wrong and I should in fact be able to add my prepaid card there (just not use certain deployment services), maybe I should check in again with the mail adress you provided.

Hm… I see a third column, to the right of the one that has Plan, Credit Balance, etc. Try scrolling to the right, maybe?

(Some GUIs unfortunately hide scrollbars, these days.)

Pre-paid cards aren’t allowed for the Add credit card part, which would set it up as a recurring source for automated billing in the future. But you should be able to make a one-time purchase of $25 worth of credits, using the box in the third column.

I would contact billing@fly.io before attempting, though, since you may not be able to use these for Phoenix.new…
