Did it have valuable data in it e.g. on the ephemeral disk or on a volume? In general apps don’t need to be restorable, as the application part is throwaway. Supply as much detail as you can.

I have a backup of the software itself, but the information stored in it has been deleted and is not backed up.

Oh dear; that is not good. Is the information on a volume, or was it on the machine’s file system?

I’m not very knowledgeable about it and I don’t know the difference. The software was a database that users entered information into.

ok, I was able to restore that app and one of its volumes. please redeploy your app using the existing volume and let me know if your data is accessible.
in the future, make sure to take backups so you still have the information if your app is deleted.

OK. So, Fly machines are often called “ephemeral”. Taken literally, the word means “lasting for a short time”; in this context it means “throwaway”. In the cloud world (the last 15 years or so), apps should be resilient to being destroyed and recreated.

Have a look at [this advice](https://12factor.net/) - particularly the bits about **statelessness** and **disposability**. It is translated into many languages, so you can probably read it in your first language.

I hope you can restore your data, but either way, make sure you can recover your app if your disk is destroyed. Backups are a good start, but they are only as good as the last one - if you back up hourly but your data changes by the minute, then you can lose up to an hour’s worth of changes.

@efrd: Is setting up a data backup now an urgent priority for you?
