I believe the unofficial answer is you get ~8GB of ephemeral storage. But that will be lost on a restart and so the recommended approach is to use a volume to store data.

It’s not! We actually don’t intend for the ephemeral disk space to be written to. It’s writable just because so much stuff breaks without it, but we’d make it readonly if we could.
You can use autoscaling with persistent volumes, though, so that’s worth a try. We’ll have a better way to autoscale with disks in a few months.

You are reading this correctly. You are not breaking any rules. The only caveat is that the amount of available space isn’t something that is advertised or guaranteed forever. If you want a guarantee, use a volume, otherwise, enjoy it while it lasts!
